THE BEAST OF REVELATION 13

Revelation 13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as [the feet] of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

This is the "beast" that many folks presume to indicate an infamous "The" "Antichrist", some believing him to have been in the first century, and others that he is yet to come.

However, when we stand back and take a broad view of bible prophecy we find that Christians, and Jews, universally understand that Old Testament prophecy was fulfilled steadily, as the era about which it was written gradually unfolded. Daniel’s successive “beast” kingdoms, spanning hundreds of years in his future, is one example. This is the traditional continuous-historic context.

A sound hermeneutic approach to New Testament prophecy would then suggest that we could expect it to unfold steadily from the time the prophecies were penned in the first century, until the return of Jesus Christ.

The reformers widely held this view, in part, because the day-year language, that those like Isaac Newton, Matthew Henry and Theileman van Braght were well familiar with, absolutely necessitates this context.

Sadly, the highest profile groups of our time who use this continuous-historic view are primarily cults that seem to believe that the papacy is “The” “Antichrist”. Please see the video “ANTICHRIST”.

Now we could go to the zoo to study these animals, or roll up our sleeves and apply some sound study tools to see if God's Word offers any help.

Employing an "adjacent hermeneutic" simply means that we study first the word, then in the context of it's verse, then chapter, then book, then surrounding books, then the other testament to see how the word is used in other contexts.

Blessedly when we arrive in the book of Daniel, we not only find a lion, bear, and leopard mentioned in the same chapter, but it happens to be in the same context of the figurative language of a dream - like John's vision!

Daniel 7:1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed: then he wrote the dream, [and] told the sum of the matters.

Daniel 7:7 After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible...

Daniel 7:23 Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.

Because Daniel described these kingdoms that were to unfold in his future so accurately, Bible scholars both Christian and Jew, understand that the kingdoms represented by Daniel's lion, bear, leopard and fourth beast, are the successive ancient kingdoms of Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece and the Roman Empire.

This is such a widely held view that a yahoo search of: "babylon, medo-persia, greece" - even in quotes - reveals over 20,000 hits.

The seats of the successive kingdoms of Babylon, Medo-Persia and Greece, are occupied today by the countries of Iraq, Iran, and Syria/Lebanon. The dragon that gives this composite leopard-bear-lion beast his power, his seat, and great authority, is of course Satan.

While the countries and various Islamic sects that comprise the seat of this "beast" have differences so great they even blow each other up, they are all perfectly united spiritually, by their false prophet Mohammed, his Quran, and the spirit of antichrist.

Muslims believe that if they confess that Jesus is the Son of God they will have committed "shirk" which is Mohammed's ONLY unpardonable sin, and the most important fundamental in Islam.

Even though Muslims believe that Jesus was born of a virgin by the will of God, most have been deceived into believing that Christians are polytheists even though our own book says:

Mark 12:29 ... The Lord our God is one Lord: ... 32 ... for there is one God; and there is none other but he:

Sura 19:88 They say: "(Allah) Most Gracious has begotten a son!" 89 Indeed ye have put forth a thing most monstrous!

1 John 2:22 Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son. 23 Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: [(but) he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also].

Surah 4:157 That they said (in boast), "We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah";- but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not:-

Since it seems as though the Islamic Empire is an excellent fit as the "beast" of Revelation, it offers a context for identifing THE false prophet mentioned later in the book:

When Muslims see this verse they are quick to point out that Mohammed never performed a single miracle, but when we consider the first century Greek we learn:

Mohammed is certainly distinguished from others by his Quran and is definitely widely known for it. A perfect fit!

Finally, it is interesting to note that the two most popular eschatologies in the 20th century church - partial preterism and futurism - NECESSARILY PRECLUDE - that Islam could be the "beast" or Mohammed could be THE false prophet of Revelation.

With a 1900 year gulf that divides them each is fully confident that the other is wrong. How do the lion, bear and leopard fit either view?
